The Surrounding Area

Carmarthenshire is a county with a beautiful coastline, containing wonderful treasures including

castles, hills, and villages where the Welsh language thrives.  There are many surrounding market

towns with well known national stores and attractive local shops, and plenty of outdoor activities are

also available.

There are many tourist attractions worth a visit such as The Millennium Coastal path, the National

Botanic Garden of Wales, The National Wetlands Centre (birdwatching) and Aberglasney Hall and Gardens.

Llansteffan is a sleepy village at the mouth of the River Towy about 5 miles south of Llangain.

Friendly and welcoming, the village has been referred to as one of Wales' best kept secrets.  There is

sea fishing, boating, horse riding, bird watching and walking available nearby and, of course, the castle offers fine views across to The Gower peninsula.

Carmarthen is located just above the upper tidal reaches of the River Towy, inland of Carmarthen

Bay on the Bristol Channel. Camarthen  is a busy market town for the produce of the surrounding

agricultural area, in particular wool and milk.

According to Welsh folklore, Merlin, the legendary wizard and adviser King Arthur

Was born near Carmarthen in 480.

One of the oldest traditions of Wales, salmon fishing by coracle, still survives

on the River Towy at Carmarthen and Llansteffan itself has views of the castle.

The village of Llansteffan (the church of Stephen) is a small but lovely spot,

nestled between the sandy shores of the Tywi estuary and the lush green hills

of the Welsh countryside, in some respects, it is an unexpected oasis of peace.

Llansteffan’s magnificently ruined castle is  just 8 miles southwest of  Camarthen.

Laugharne is famed for it's connection with Dylan Thomas but it is a  lovely town in it's

own right with a castle and views over Taff Estuary. Nearby Pendine with its vast stretch of sand on

which many land speed records have been attempted and broken.  It is a pleasant beach for seaside

days out, and home of Babs Museum of Speed, Dylan Thomas Boat House & Merlin the Wizard (Camarthen).
